Cruising with the Encounter
When launched in 1976, SY Encounter was an ultra modern racer designed to participate and win at the highest level. She was also designed and built to participate in long offshore Ocean events.
She is fitted with a simple but full interior including a well-equipped galley, saloon, bathroom, an aft-cabin and complete chart-table.
She has good sized water and fuel tanks, ample battery power combined with a charger/inverter, powerful fridge/freezer, hot/cold water and allows up to six people to sleep in reasonable comfort.
Nearly 40 years later, following a few improvements but without compromising her original concept, she is still a delight to cruise.
The Principality of Monaco is just a few feet away from the Encounter's home port of Cap d'Ail. The waters here are perfect for an afterwork sail or a relaxing Sunday afternoon stroll. We often spot dolphins and whales in these waters.
We like to end a day cruising on the Encounter with a fine glass of rosé under the French Riviera sunset!
Depending on the weather, the Encounter will cruise to the French Island Corsica in about 12 hours. The distance from the port of Cap D'Ail to Corsica is only 90 nautical miles. We often take the Encounter there and leave it for a month whilst we travel back and forward with the plane.
Corsica is a great place for Cruising and we love to discover the deep blue waters in the wide bays with mountainous backdrops and picture postcard ports.
The Scandola Nature Reserve is located on the West Coast of Corsica is one of Encounter's favorite anchorage places.
Menorca is the first Spanish island to reach sailing with the Encounter from the French coast. Mallorca and Ibiza follow close behind it.
From it's home port Cap D'Ail it is about 270 nautical miles and depending on the wind it will take us approximately 2 days to make the crossing. This beautiful island has a population of less than 10.000 people. The capital Mahon has an idyllic port which we enjoy to visit. Mahon offers a great variety of restaurants and bars that are typical for the Spanish coast.
Cruising around Menorca is an adventure with a vast breeze that takes us to many undiscovered bays. It is ideal for water sports activities and this makes Menorca one of our favorite places to visit.
